If you come to the Language Lunch often, you’ll know that many of the course leaders have a deft turn of phrase – the ability to express themselves well, and in a skilful and sometimes distinctive way. Part of this comes from being able to use set phrases like idioms and collocations (such as “a turn of phrase”) confidently. At the same time, it’s not just knowing how the words come together, but how to actually say them so that they sound smooth and natural. In this workshop, we will talk about typical idioms and collocations in different contexts, and discuss what is often called “the music of speech”, or prosody: how intonation, stress and rhythm increase fluency.

The Language Lunch series is a fun and time-saving opportunity to improve your English-language competence over a light buffet lunch which will be provided free of charge. In the winter semester, the series continues with two workshops: (1) Common Mistakes & False Friends, and (2) Sounding Natural in English - Idioms, Collocations and Prosody. You are welcome to book one or both workshops, but in any case, please make sure that you register separately for each Language Lunch.
